When the engine is running, the combustion chamber generates extremely high pressure. Some of the
high-temperature, high-pressure unburned mixture and exhaust gases can seep into the crankcase below
through the gaps in the piston rings. These gases are called "blow-by." Problems caused:
Pressure generation: Blow-by causes increased pressure inside the crankcase, which can damage oil seals
and gaskets, causing oil leaks. Oil contamination: Blow-by contains water vapor, acidic substances, soot,
and unburned fuel, which dilute and contaminate the engine oil, reducing its performance and accelerating
engine wear. Environmental pollution: Blow-by contains harmful hydrocarbons (HC), which, if directly released
into the atmosphere, will cause air pollution. To solve these problems, modern engines use a "closed-loop
crankcase ventilation system," and the oil-gas separator is the core of this system.
The Specific Functions and Importance of an Oil-Gas Separator Its working process and functions can be broken
down as follows:
1. Core Function: Separating Engine Oil and Exhaust Gas Blow-by gas is a mixture of engine oil droplets and
high-temperature exhaust gas (an oil mist). The oil-gas separator employs a labyrinthine, filter,
and centrifugal structure. When the mixed gas passes through, tiny oil droplets collide with the separation wall,
coalescing into larger droplets, thus separating from the gas.
2. Recovering Engine Oil, Reducing Consumption The separated oil droplets gather and, under the influence of
gravity or system pressure, flow back to the engine oil pan. This effectively prevents engine oil from being
burned along with the exhaust gas, thereby reducing oil consumption and avoiding the "oil burning" phenomenon.
3. Purifying Exhaust Gas, Participating in Re-combustion The relatively "clean" exhaust gas (mainly combustible
gas) after separation is introduced into the engine's intake manifold. These gases then enter the combustion
chamber and are burned again along with fresh air and fuel. Benefits: Environmentally friendly:
Avoids the direct release of harmful hydrocarbons into the atmosphere. Energy-saving: Utilizes the energy
from these combustible gases, improving fuel economy.
4. Maintaining Crankcase Pressure Balance By venting the gas from the crankcase, the system maintains normal
or slightly negative pressure inside the crankcase. This prevents oil leaks caused by excessive pressure
(from various oil seals and gaskets), protecting the engine's seals.
