The truck solenoid valve is the "electronic switch" in the truck's air brake system. It receives electrical

signals and then controls the flow and direction of compressed air, thereby achieving precise and rapid control

of the braking action.

You can think of it as a "faucet" controlled by an electric current, except that instead of water, it controls

the crucial high-pressure air.

Core Function: The "Translator" and "Executor" Between Electricity and Air

Truck braking systems are air-pressure braking systems. When the driver presses the brake pedal, it doesn't

directly generate braking force, but rather sends an electrical signal. This signal is transmitted to the solenoid

valve, which then opens or closes, allowing high-pressure air from the air tank to pass through and enter the

brake calipers, pushing the brake pads to apply pressure.

Therefore, its core function is to convert a weak electrical signal into a powerful air pressure action.

Main Types and Specific Functions

The solenoid valve is not a single component, but a family of functions, each playing a specific role in the

truck braking system. The most important types include:

1. ABS Solenoid Valve (The Core of the Anti-lock Braking System)

This is the most complex and critical solenoid valve.

Function: To prevent wheel lock-up and skidding during emergency braking, maintaining vehicle steering ability

and driving stability.

Working Process:

Pressure Increase: During normal braking, the solenoid valve opens, allowing unobstructed air pressure to

enter the brake calipers, increasing braking force.

Pressure Holding: When the wheel speed sensor detects that a wheel is about to lock up, the ECU instructs

the ABS solenoid valve to close, isolating the brake calipers and maintaining a constant braking force,

preventing further increase.

Pressure Reduction: If the wheel continues to tend to lock up, the ECU instructs the solenoid valve to connect

the brake calipers to the atmosphere, releasing some air pressure, reducing braking force, and allowing the

wheel to resume rotation.

This process can occur dozens or even hundreds of times per second, equivalent to "high-frequency

intermittent braking," but with far greater efficiency and precision than manual operation.

2. Differential Valve (Trailer Control Valve)
Mainly used to control the braking of the trailer.

Function: Based on the braking signal from the tractor unit (tractor), it independently and precisely

controls the air pressure flowing to the trailer, achieving coordinated braking between the tractor and trailer.

3. Relay Valve/Emergency Valve

While not entirely solenoid valves, modern relay valves often integrate electromagnetic control functions.

 

Function: Rapidly amplifies and transmits air pressure. Installed near the brake caliper, it uses a small air

pressure signal to control the passage of atmospheric pressure, thereby accelerating braking response and

reducing brake lag. Emergency valves can automatically implement emergency braking in case of malfunctions

such as pipe breaks.

Why do trucks use solenoid valves?

Fast Response: The transmission speed of electrical signals is much faster than the flow speed of air pressure

in long pipes, making the braking system react more quickly.

Precise Control: It can achieve complex "pressure holding" and "pressure reduction" operations like ABS,

which is difficult for purely mechanical valves to do.

Intelligent Control: It serves as a bridge between electronic control systems (such as ABS, EBS, ESC)

and actuators (brake calipers), forming the foundation of electronic truck safety.

High Integration: It facilitates connection to the vehicle's central computer (ECU) for unified management

and fault diagnosis.
